The Masked Scammer Who Turned FOMO Into ₹8.5 Crore in One Night
A cryptic Instagram account built a month of hype around August 25 — then asked 1.66 lakh followers to pay ₹500 for a reveal that was just AI-generated motivational slop.

Sometime in the first week of August, a white-masked figure started posting short, cryptic Reels to an Instagram account called @25.august.2026. The hook was simple and devastatingly effective: something big is happening on August 25. Everyone will remember it. No face, no name, no details. Just a countdown and pure manufactured suspense.
By the time August 25 arrived, the account had accumulated hundreds of thousands of followers and a linked Telegram channel with roughly 180,000 subscribers. When midnight hit, followers were redirected to that Telegram channel and told the reveal would cost ₹500, payable via Telegram Stars — a deliberate workaround to Instagram's monetization rules. Early estimates suggest between 1.6 and 1.8 lakh people paid. Do the math and you're looking at somewhere between ₹8 and ₹9 crore (roughly $1M USD) collected in a single night.
What did the paying audience receive? A 14-minute countdown followed by a generic, almost certainly AI-generated motivational video with zero substance. No exclusive drop, no grand revelation, no anything. The reaction online was immediate and furious — but also, notably, a little impressed. "He played the game well," one X user admitted grudgingly. "The world is full of fools; you just need someone to fool them," wrote another. The identity of the person behind the mask remains unknown.
The story has become a flashpoint for a bigger conversation about FOMO-as-a-business-model and the particular vulnerability of Indian social media audiences to these Instagram-to-Telegram funnel scams. The same pipeline — bait on Instagram, trap on Telegram — has been used repeatedly in recent months, and each time the numbers get bigger. ₹8.5 crore for a motivational video you didn't ask for is a new kind of internet landmark.
“A masked Indian Instagram creator built weeks of mystery around August 25, funneled followers to Telegram, and collected an estimated ₹8.5 crore from over 1.6 lakh people who paid ₹500 for a reveal that turned out to be a generic AI video.”
